Trace involved with research at Grand Valley State University
For the past 10 years, Dr. Bill Schroeder, co-owner of Trace, has held a part-time research appointment in the Chemistry Department at Grand Valley State University.
Dr. Schroeder, along with Dr. Robert Smart, Professor of Chemistry at GVSU, has been directing the research efforts of several senior students.
Their current project is designed to discover new antibacterial substances.
Since resistance to currently available antibiotics is a serious world wide problem, the search for new antibacterials has become very important and is receiving considerable attention from the healthcare industry.
The GVSU program is designed to prepare new organic compounds related to known antibacterials and test them for activity against microorganisms that have become resistant to antibiotics now on the market.
The class of compounds under study, is also expected to show some anti-cancer activity and will be tested against HIV and other serious infections.
Preliminary results on the synthesis of these new compounds was presented at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research at the University of Montana.
Subsequent studies on the possible biological activity of these materials is expected to involve the cooperation of other departments at GVSU, as well as one or more pharmaceutical companies.
One of Dr. Schroeder's students, Shannon Biros who also spent several months working at Trace as a chemist-intern, has returned to teach at GVSU after doing post doctoral research at U. C. Berkeley.

R. Bruce Pelletier
President and co-owner since January 1990 Air quality advisor and special projects coordinator

Biographical Summary
Bruce Pelletier received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Limnology from Michigan State University in 1973. He continued his education to earn a Master of Science Degree on Limnology from Central Michigan University in 1977. Bruce has over 30 years of experience working in the environmental laboratory profession, as production manager and analytical chemist. He has worked as water quality consultant for the Three Lakes Association of Bellaire, Michigan and has presented lectures to the Michigan Academy of Science.
